The Go-Go’s were an all girl punk rock / rock / new wave band from LA. Formed in Los Angeles in 1978, the Go-Go’s initially consisted of Belinda Carlisle (vocals), Jane Wiedlin (guitar, vocals), Margot Olavarria (bass) and Elissa Bello (drums). Later adding an extra guitarist in Charlotte Caffey, then Kathy Valentine replacing Olavarria on the bass and Gina Schock replaced Bello on the drums.

“Our Lips Are Sealed” is a song written by The Go-Go’s guitarist Jane Wiedlin and The Specials and Fun Boy Three singer Terry Hall. Both writters released a version of the song. Firstly The Go-Go’s as the opening track on their 1981 album Beauty and the Beat and then as a single on 12th June 1981. Then on 29th April 1983, Terry Hall’s band The Fun Boy Three released their version as a seven inch. The Go-Go’s is the better known in the US and Fun Boy Three version here in The UK. Will add their version at the end of this post.

The official music video for the song features the band members riding around in a convertible, stopping at a lingerie shop and splashing around in a fountain interspersed with footage of the band playing a club booking.

Below is the Fun Boy Three version, taken from the UK weekly pop show, Top of The Pops.

The Go-Go’s - Our Lips Are Sealed (1981)

– Lyrics –

Can you hear them
They talk about us
Telling lies
Well, that’s no surprise

Can you see them
See right through them
They have no shield
No secrets to reveal

It doesn’t matter what they say
In the jealous games people play
Our lips are sealed

There’s a weapon
That we must use
In our defense
Silence reveals

When you look at them
Look right through them
That’s when they’ll disappear
That’s when we’ll be feared

It doesn’t matter what they say
In the jealous games people play
Our lips are sealed

Give no mind to what they say
It doesn’t matter anyway
Our lips are sealed

Hush, my darling
Don’t you cry
Quiet, angel
Forget their lies

Can you hear them
They talk about us
Telling lies
Well, that’s no surprise

Can you see them
See right through them
They have no shield
No secrets to reveal

It doesn’t matter what they say
In the jealous games people play
Our lips are sealed

Pay no mind to what they say
It doesn’t matter anyway
Our lips are sealed
Our lips are sealed
Our lips are sealed
